Wait did I miss Mojang abandoning SemVer after like a decade? Did they do a Q&A or anything to explain the rationale?

21·20 days agoI honestly feel like our best route to competition at this point is the big players being forced to license technology to eachother and smaller companies.
The reason CPUs don’t suffer from these issues nearly as badly as graphics is that Intel and AMD are effectively stuck having to share technology with eachother.

4·21 days agoYeah I think Windows 8 in general is just what happens when you don’t have proper user testing and go entirely based on what the shareholders think the next big thing in computing is going to be.
At the time everyone thought that touchscreens and tablets were going to take over everything, at this point though it’s become pretty clear that tablets are for media consumption and some creative work. For productivity they just aren’t as good as a full on desktop environment.

2691·21 days agoNot sure why it would be unexpected? 8.1 was not a good OS from a UI perspective, but it was the last version before Microsoft went all in on making Windows a service and not a product you paid to use.
They still had the incentive to make the OS better and faster. I remember videos from Microsoft at the time showing how fast Windows 8 could get to the desktop compared to 7. They don’t really even try to work on stuff like that anymore.
Me when I associate all straight relationship dynamics with a bait post of a toxic relationship I saw on twitter

61·25 days agoJesus that’s a lot of spaghetti code, and why are they hardcoding a bunch of terms? Is this just for a public facing site, or does every deployed instance effectively filter these out?

I think I remember reading about a different process that doesn’t kill them at least, we capture them and remove barnacles from them
In exchange we take their blue blood
Not a trade offer I would take personally, but we get vaccines out of it so there’s that at least
This Robertson screw slander is unacceptable

451·1 month agoIt seems like the actual windows kernel isn’t that bad, it’s mainly all the stuff on top of it at this point that is killing the OS

It seems like every time a tech leak is wrong you end up seeing his name with it
Smear campaign or not, their marketing and social media presence is aggressive and obnoxious on purpose. It seems to be purely focused on getting as many eyes on them as possible without actually considering what those eyes will think of them after getting the desired attention.
When I think of PETA I don’t think of an organization with strong moral and ethical principles, I think of an organization that made a bunch of tone-deaf video game parodies in the 2000s to try and get attention. Those are wounds that are entirely self-inflicted.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Latest Windows 11 Update Gets Rid of the Start Menu and ExplorerEnglish
8·2 months agoIt’s less the developer team that did it and more the shareholders and executive team that has turned the product to complete trash.
It’s so dumb, even with the AI stuff I wouldn’t care that much if it was just a new thing the OS could do if the rest of the thing was actually stable. But they seem to be allergic to doing some actual house cleaning and instead keep bolting things on.
The fact that the explorer can regularly completely freeze up nowadays or flat out crash is actually insane. That should be at the top of the priority list before anything else gets worked on. But instead they decided: let’s add a new keyboard shortcut to open a really laggy copilot chat interface.

Classic Mojang, I guess it’s probably in an attempt to make it easy for users to understand when a release was made.
I was going to say it wouldn’t make much of a difference for mods given they only really have one major release a year, but I’m pretty sure they also announced that they wanted to do more small releases instead. So we’ll see I guess, main fear I have is that we’re going to end up with very weird version range constraints.
