Beer Store locations across Ontario are shutting down as the chain faces unprecedented competition.

What was once held a monopoly for the sale of beer and other ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages across Ontario could soon be facing extinction, as a swath of closures have wracked the company in recent months.

The beer store is still a excellent place to buy beer. The price is cheeper and you don’t pay the tax on the sale.

Also, not to mention the larger selections.

The Beer Store never struck me as having a good selection, even compared to the LCBO.

The beer store is a foreign owned private entity that has been granted a government monopoly on a wide range of beer sales. It is completely ridiculous in both concept and execution.

Also, not to mention the larger selections.

As compared to what exactly? Spoken like someone who has never left Ontario.

As an Ontarian who was drinking in Belgium in high school, came home for university, moved to Europe for a few years, then moved to the US, I have to say “What?!”

Everywhere else that I’ve lived has had a far better selection and prices. Also, as someone who doesn’t drive and lived in Toronto in my 20s, walking 30 minutes to the nearest Beer Store (I lived at Yonge and Eglinton) and carrying a 2-4 back home in the winter sucked. Everywhere else I’ve lived, I can buy beer a block away.
