The core problem IMO is the fundamentally corporate desire to make every player have the same homogeneous experience. Games need more Metroidvania and Immersive Sim elements.

i haven’t played the mordor games but i don’t think this addition would transform a shallow open world into being tolerable personally, i think its kind of overhyped because of the patent stuff.

I think it is both. It could absolutely be developed on further and perhaps become something revolutionary but as long as its held hostage by IP bullshit that won’t happen.

I tried to olay Shadows Of Mordor recently and found out why people don’t discuss or praise pretty much any other part of that game. Bland as fuck. It has the detective vision, arkham-ish combo combat, non-canonical story (understandable but ai think they did it in a dumb way and not a way that freed them to make a better game necessarily).

I’m really not convinced the ubisoft 8 gajillion square miles of open world (with no reason to interact with it) is solved by plopping down even more box ticking bullshit on it. No hate for the Nemesis System, it’s a cool idea and all and the copyright situation is annoying bullshit but fundamentally an AC with an insanely reduced square mile count but every building is enterable would be way more interesting than what they’re doing now

Hear me out, they take Assassin’s Creed and change everything about it, including the name. What if it’s now about earning your way up through the ranks of the royal navy in the 1740s? And every ship over 8 guns in the historical record is accurately simulated because it’s mostly text based. You move a little sprite around the vast oceans dealing with improperly packed provisions and drunken sailors. You have to careen your ship on the coast of Isla Mujeres for repairs. It takes years to get get back to your family in England and it’s weeks before you leave again. I would play the hell out of that game. What were we talking about?
