There is an 80% chance that global temperatures will break at least one annual heat record in the next five years, raising the risk of extreme droughts, floods and forest fires, a new report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has shown.

For the first time, the data also indicated a small likelihood that before 2030, the world could experience a year that is 2C hotter than the preindustrial era, a possibility scientists described as “shocking”.

Pretty lame prediction. Since 2023, daily temperatures have averaged +1.5C. This year is pretty close to last year’s record. But, the fact that there has been a step up from 2023 El nino, that is +0.3C above the step up from 2015 El nino is significant without needing 2024 record to be eclipsed a bit.

before 2030, the world could experience a year that is 2C hotter than the preindustrial era

That is an ambitious call. Another El nino step up would get to 1.8 or 1.9C. Of course significant and disturbing, but calling for 2C by 2030 is unnecessary.
