    I’ve said it before.

Anyone that’s ever had any long term interactions with people involved in christian music scenes, particularly contemporary christian music, knows that the entire industry is morally bankrupt, and most of the musicians are mid tier hacks using the label of christian to cover up their many vices and abuses.

You will not meet a shittier group of human beings outside of a nazi rally. Since there’s some overlap between christian music and nazism and bigotry, that’s not saying much. Mind you, that overlap isn’t so huge that it’s the same thing, but you’d be surprised how often you run into the nazi memorabilia “collectors”, and folks with white sheets sewn into interesting garments in ccm and even plain gospel.

And don’t get me started on the drug use and sexual abuse that goes on. Some of those fuckers make 80s rock bands look ascetic.

And it isn’t just the big names and big money circles either. That shit goes all the way down to performers going around to perform at churches.

Which, I ain’t got problems with sex and drugs. You do you, I’m fine. Just don’t be a faker. Don’t be getting your dick sucked out back of a church in the tour bus after singing about saving yourself for Jesus. And yes, that’s a very specific thing, and it did happen, and it all got ignored because those were “good christians”.

For real, I’ve known black metal performers into the ugly kind of Satanism that are better people that most of the ccm performers out there.

There’s nothing hornier than religious sexual purity culture. Add perfoming arts & fame and you have a very sordid cocktail.

Good for her, but I can’t take articles serious when they use slam, slamming or slammed repeatedly and and unironically.

Holy shit! I’ve an old friend that had a mildly successful Christian band back in the early ‘00s and they opened for DC Talk a few times. He once told me that he smoked pot in a jacuzzi with Michael Tait (the guy referenced in the article) and that he repeatedly put his hand on his thigh under the water, but tried to laugh it off as “messing around.”

Sure, but you didn’t grow up with this moralistic bullshit pushing ccm as a moral alternative to secular music. Its just hypocrisy all the way down from the American Christo-fascism movement

The only difference between the entertainment industry and the porn industry, is that in the porn industry the talent know they’re going to get screwed.

She said she wants the CCM industry to crumble - Christian Contemporary Music. If you’re not familiar it’s a very big niche, but essentially they imitate whatever music is popular but make a Christian version of it. And because for some people they’ll only listen to Christian music, it’s a captive audience.

After reading it, I think she means that some of this wouldn’t have happened if many Christians weren’t so hostile to LGBT+ people.

She is contrasting being gay as a sin with profiting on “faith and vulnerability”. Nothing to do with “music is bad.”

      Emphasis mine.

“Because this is a man whose entire faith identity is built upon a faulty structure of self-hatred, to please a system that would rather cover up abhorrent behaviour for 20+ years (and make money off of it) rather than accept that being gay is not the problem,” Williams wrote, giving her perspective of having grown up around faith-based music communities in the Nashville area.

“I grew up around this. I am not afraid of any of these people — most of them have written me off anyway by now. How many stories like this from this VERY small corner of the music industry will we hear before we realize that capitalizing on people’s faith and vulnerability is the ‘sin.’

There’s definitely some crazy logic in this comment, but it isn’t coming from Hayley Williams.

She’s talking about the industry, not the music. It is a bit of a weird article though, misspelling Tait’s name in the subtitle and missing a word further down (“published a lengthy article said to be the result of a two and a half investigation into Tait”). I thought rolling stone usually didn’t make those kinds of editing mistakes!

Well, maybe you’re right. That nuance wasn’t obvious to me.

The title says “Christian Music Industry”, in the article she is quoted as saying “I hope the CCM industry crumbles”. I believe it is pretty clear that she’s talking about the industry.
