Welcome to lemmy.4d2.org! We’re glad you’re here. Here are some quick words about what we’re trying to do here, and how you can help make this community the best possible version of itself.

See the comment below if you’re coming from Reddit and just trying to figure out how to see posts.

Who we are and how we’re different

This Lemmy instance is a service of 4d2 dot org. Like our other free services, our focus is on privacy and transparency, with an affection for retrocomputing and a left-libertarian cypherpunk sensibility.

We practice open federation with other Lemmy instances, unlike some who have chosen to defederate with instances they perceive as “extremist”. We aim to be a safe and responsive home base for you to browse the Fediverse and build new communities.

Also unlike most instances, we’re choosing to allow NSFW content. Please be reasonable and don’t make me regret that decision. You can view (or indeed, create) NSFW communities by signing up for an account. You are always in control of whether you see NSFW content here, so feel free to leave that switch off if that isn’t your jam.

We intend to moderate with a light touch, but we won’t tolerate content that incites hatred, especially toward marginalized groups, and it’s obviously not OK to post anything overtly illegal.

How you can help

Participate! You don’t have to lurk. Lemmy is young, and although there’s been a huge influx of new folks coming over from Reddit, this is still a very small community. Please don’t hesitate to post, comment, upvote/downvote, etc. We need your voice.

If you don’t see a community that matches an interest of yours, or if you find one on a federated server and think we should have one here, go ahead and create it! Anyone can create and moderate new communities here.

Last, if you’d like to provide material support for this service, our XMR address is:

Donations are appreciated but are never expected. We’re not here to make money 😀

Other tools we provide

We run a couple of other services that may help enhance your experience here: a link shortener, and a very simple file hosting service. Feel free to use them!

Please note that we’re using Lemmy’s built-in image hosting feature, so you can upload images directly in your posts and comments - you don’t need to use a separate file host like the one linked above.
