I’m looking for a solution to replace the SD card in my raspberry pi 4 with an SSD.
There are many “hats” from geekworm that do exactly that. However, they all use the USB port and mentioned that the adapter can create interference in the 2,4 GHz range.
The main purpose of the raspi is being the Home Assistant server and the Zigbee hub (Raspbee II dongle on the io pins). Zigbee is using 2,4GHz as well and I don’t want the connectivity being impaired.
What’s the best option here? I thought of getting an “external” ssd so the adapter isn’t as close to the dongle. Does the interference from the adapter itself or the USB port on the raspi?
Its from the USB ports itself from what I’ve read. You’ll need distance between the zigbee controller and the USB port. USB controllers solve this with an extension cable but idk if you can do that on the io pins. You can try shielding the USB port.
Thanks! I don’t know much about shielding, do you have a hint what I’m looking for?
I could also ask the manufacturer if I can just use an extension cable to put the controller away. That would probably be the easiest solution!
I don’t know much about shielding either but I’m imagining any sort of material you could make a Faraday bag out of should work. But you’re better off just googling.
I bought a bunch of used NVMe disks on a “garage sale”, about 5$ each. Some were damaged and didn’t turn on, but most work fine, then I bought USB pockets for them and made rpi4 USB boots. I have 4x raspberry pis like this running for over 2 years now. The cluster runs homeassistant too, but my zigbee hub is in another room, I’ve never noticed any interference on zigbee nor wifi.
I think you’re worrying too much about it. The interference would be noticeable under very heavy disk pressure, which won’t be frequent in your case.
