I checked out of the smartphone market a long time ago because I hate technology.

How are fold phones these days? Good? Or they a gimmick?

Better to save your money especially if you don’t have that much. You can be quite fashionable otherwise for a fraction of the price and slum about with a refurb Pixel 7 running GrapheneOS.

You pay more just for the gimmick. But personally I love the gimmick so it’s worth it for me. I currently have a flip but when the time comes to upgrade I hope I have enough money for a fold. The flip is great since it fits any pocket but a fold makes more sense.

I miss my old flip phone but it just seems like a gimmick. Nothing better than the satisfying feeling of hanging up on someone by clapping it shut.

In theory the benefit is supposed to be more screen size without sacrificing portability. In practice though durability is always going to be more of an issue the more moving and especially bending parts you have, since that causes friction and stresses that sooner or later will damage any material.

Personally if i want a tablet, i’ll get a tablet. It’ll be cheaper and have better performance for the price. But there are always going to be people who are drawn to gimmicks, and if they are the type of person to buy a new phone every year anyway then they also don’t need to care about long term durability either.

Here’s what i mean when i say these things can be extremely fragile. Obviously this is a pathological example since most fold phones don’t take it to this extreme, but even on a regular fold phone you will have some of these problems. Simpler really is better most of the time. Especially when for that price i can buy a tablet and a phone and still have money left over.

I’ve never had this kind of phone nor do I know anyone who does, so I can’t give a definitive answer except that the Huawei Mate XT looks so cool.

I love the form factor . Mine is very narrow compared to other phones when closed which makes it easier to hold that most, and then when I want a mini tablet it’s right there.
