Is this community just going to turn into a generic EU>US circlejerk?
I would report the post as off-topic but you’re a moderator. So what do you see this community as? Because I’m just here for posts about purchase alternatives, not this.
Unfortunately the signal to noise ratio on this community is super low because of posts like this. It’s no longer a place to find European alternatives.
Do you think that Lemmy is popular enough as a Reddit alternative that we don’t need those kind of posts?
The reasoning behind them is that most of the time when someone brings up Lemmy on Reddit as an alternative using European servers, the general consensus is that the Lemmy isn’t a suitable alternative, usually for incorrect arguments, so if a few people here can try to reverse that trend that can help giving Lemmy a better image over the long term.
Feel free to hide those posts of you don’t like them, there are usually one or two per week
That’s one way to see it, but if I came from Reddit looking for an alternative and found that people are just talking about Reddit here I’d see little reason to make the switch. Kinda gives me “jealous ex who can’t let go” vibes. Don’t know about one or two posts per week, I didn’t count but it just feels like a lot more to me.
Maybe we’re not seeing the same things. OP has posted a few links like this recently along with other users. When this community started it was more about “here’s a US product or company that blindly supports Trump and here’s the European alternative you should consider”. Now most of the posts I see are “EU good US bad”. 😞
I’m not saying there isn’t good content. I’m saying there’s a lot of noise. Case in point is that the first two posts I see right now are:
A post about how Trump wants the EU to buy their horror show chicken. Not sure how that helps finding alternatives. Alternatives to what? This is another EU good US bad post.
Here’s another one that I’m not sure is the best quality for this community. Why is this article (from 5 months ago) relevant for this community do you think? Does it present alternatives to US dominated services or products that could be fulfilled by European alternatives?
Ahh tomayto tomato… Maybe I’m just old but I prefer to see posts about actual alternatives to US products and services rather than memes and articles about politics. Each to their own 😊
Everyone has their own vision of the movement. Based on the upvotes on those posts, seems like people find them valuable. Also, feel free to post the type of content you would like to see!
I like this article being shared with me, so for myself I don’t mind it being here but I agree it would fit better at !europe@feddit.org or somewhere similar.

Still better than the millionth “hey look someone on reddit mentioned us” post.

I just had a look, here are the posts (https://feddit.nl/search?q=%2Fr%2FbuyfromEU&type=Posts&listingType=All&communityId=805743&page=1&sort=New)
So 5 posts in a month.
It’s a very minor topic. As stated in another comment,
Current homepage, sorted by New comments
Reddit really isn’t didcussed that much in this community
Not sure if we’re seeing the same content, all posts but this one are on-topic

I’m not saying there isn’t good content. I’m saying there’s a lot of noise. Case in point is that the first two posts I see right now are:
First post is a reminder that Trump doubles down on being a commercial enemy
The second post thus presents alternatives to Amazon? How is that not on topic for a community about European alternatives?
Here’s another meme which whilst funny to some highlights my point about lowering the signal to noise ratio on this community.
This kind of memes pop up once a day. Feel free to hide the post if you dislike this type of content, it still seems on topic

Has the situation drastically changed since that article? Based on the comments (https://feddit.nl/post/32162328?scrollToComments=true), the article still seems relevant
