I had such a blast watching this video the yesterday. The USA is so utterly fucked in manufacturing capabilities in comparison to China that I’d say it’s not even funny if it weren’t hilarious. I was wheezing laughing when at the 37 minute mark it’s revealed that the patently sinophobic choice of buying the chainmail in India instead of China was just a scam that made him pay even more because it was made in China anyway.

The Chinese destruction of the american manufacturing economy demonstrated through burger tool by an unaware yank: literally my dream come true.

I mean he has a point in that the US not having like, any basic Tool/Die ability is pretty bad (for the US), and fostering local ability isn’t a bad idea.

But he clearly impregnates the rest of the video with anti-Chinese bullshit. Like, he couldn’t find any US supply for the chain-mail, so he compromises and imports it - but going to great lengths specifically to avoid China. Then when he does find a supplier (in India), turns out they’re just drop-shipping Chinese parts lmao.

And at one point he specifically mentions the CCP as some evil force.

The whole video kinda made my skin crawl I dunno. Dude makes some interesting videos but this one is kinda gross. It reads less “pro-local” and more “anti-Chinese”

Yeah if it was a youtuber making this and it was a workers co-op or something and they just explained things it would be fine. The Sinophobia is cringe. Also exploiting workers is cringe.

Making a product paid for by your patrons only to then sell it for a profit while stealing wages from your workers… Super cringe.

This guys is based out of Hunstville, Alabama, and if you do anything STEM-adjacent there it’s for the military in some capacity. I’ve been around those types and the Sinophobia runs deep. It’s lame though, his videos could be a lot better if his worldview didn’t come through as much.

“Fun” fact: the civic center in Huntsville is (still) named after Nazi scientist Wernher von Braun.

He’s openly talked about his long career in engineering for the military, as of the last time I kept up with his channel (8 years ago maybe).

He’ll go do humanitarian stuff like building orphanages in Peru and see absolutely no contradiction between that and his day job.

Ok so I just got up to the chainmail part.

This video isn’t a “i want to make something in america” video, it’s a “i don’t want to make something from china” video. They’re quite content in using India’s manufactured chainmail.

    Seems pretty sus tbh.

This guy weirds me out and I’ve never watched his videos. I just know him, Mark Rober, and Jerry Rig Everything seem close, and they all weird me the fuck out. Its not even something I can pinpoint exactly. Rober at least showed his ass when he did that Palmer Lucky colab for his automated killing systems.

Only reason he is gunna sell any is because hes using his youtube channel to make them more popular than they should be.

Im gunna laugh so hard when the Chinese make a better cheaper version anyways.

Yeah exactly, it’s literally only going to sell because of who he is, not because of the product being competitive in the market.

I sincerely think he’s not going to do well with this though. If it was half that price? Yeah people would buy it. But at this utterly absurd price people are going to look at it and go “nah”.

And it looks like ballz, clearly the superior version.

I also found the addition of the long handle a bit stupid. “Hey, we need to make a rough cleaning tool that requires quite a bit of pressure from the user due to the nature of cleaning burnt fat on a grill. Yeah, let’s add a long handle to make the user have to exert a ton of leverage instead of using their body weight!”. What you linked seems much more intelligent.

There’s a video where he interviews some higher up in the military about propaganda and the guy he’s talking to explains that the video he’s making is itself propaganda and the dipshit just soyfaces and goes “wow I never realized!” Classic engineering brain.

It’s that Soviet joke about American’s not noticing propaganda, but here even the propagandists don’t notice what they’re doing.

I hate American exceptionalism but their brainwashing tech is truly world-class.

Oh and also ROFL at the little businesses in the US getting their IP stolen… THROUGH BLOODY AMAZON. Petit bourgeois in shambles when they discover that IP was only there for big corpos all this time.

The video was interesting, clearly American manufacturing is fucked 😂 He had a couple of sinophobic moments for sure. I loved the part in which he got Chinese chainmail from “India”. Not ordering it from China when he could not replace it was a revealing choice.

I get his mission, but it just so incredibly clearly shows how capitalism is a shitty system and that little “invest in local manufacturing even if less profits” speech seems more like a selling point than inspirational.

I read that this thing costs 75$, which is ridiculous. I would like to see the actual costs, can’t imagine it being near that price. If it is, then what a shitty deal. He understands one thing though, his IP does not mean shit, if someone can produce something good enough or equally good for 1/3 the price.

China really is beating capitalists at their own game 😂

The funniest part of this video is that his product ends up costing $75 and still sold out because americans are so stupid. He still manages to gaslight his viewers making them think his product is inherently or more quality and it’s gonna last longer because its american made.

As if you needed a $75 grill brush when you can just use some aluminium foil 😭 influencers once again proving they’re salesmen.

Depends on what you are doing. But machine time is incredibly expensive in the US. But many of the repair parts for the machines will likely have to come from China so…
