UK health officials launch study into side-effects of weight loss drugs after increased reports of acute pancreatitis
Hundreds of people have reported problems with their pancreas linked to taking weight loss and diabetes injections, prompting health officials to launch a study into side-effects.
Some cases of pancreatitis reported to be linked to GLP-1 medicines (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) have been fatal.
The move comes after an increase in reports of acute pancreatitis to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s (MHRA) Yellow Card scheme, which monitors any adverse reactions to medications and medical devices in the UK.
That makes a lot of sense. It’s a huge bummer though, we need more tools to tackle obesity, beyond the obvious education and access to affordable healthy food and physical activities. I’m curious to read the future studies that come out
I’ve heard of some interesting progress in a treatment that combined trevogrumab, semaglutide (sp?) and garetosmab. Lots of fat loss, muscle growth, and compared favourably against the usual bodybuilder jabs in terms of their hormonal side effects.
It’s not going to lead to perfect solutions soon by any means, but there’s progress.
Ozempic is part of this regimen and it’s tied to these pancreatitis cases. I think there’s a lot of rose coloured glasses right now. We have to see the results of more side effect studies.
