I’m a fan of acrescent but something about nearly $6000 in monthly costs doesn’t smell right.
They need $5800/month in recurring donations to fund a full time developer to be working on Accrescent, implementing new features, creating new tooling, etc. The blog post clearly says this.
Yeah thanks I can read. It is not clear at all.
An example is that it says “to fund full-time development”, and you’ve assumed thats a “full-time developer.”
What are we talking here - is it a salary for someone? Overheads? Marketing? Hosting etc? What will donations give us? Is there a roadmap? If anything, the store needs more apps. A slick new frontend is pretty far down my list of wants.
And before you come back with another spikey comment remember that I’m saying this as a fan of Acrescent. I’m not suggesting there’s anything nefarious going on. If they are were asking VC’s for cash this is the information they’d be expected to provide.
- Develop a privacy-friendly app store.
- Only accept donations through Microsoft.
- wHy IsNt AnYoNe dOnAtInG?
- Fail.
Our income comes from two primary sources: 1) recurring and one-time GitHub Sponsors donations and 2) cryptocurrency donations.
- Don’t read the article
- Be completely wrong
- Look like an ass when someone calls you out
I did read the article. Crypto is just not even worth mentioning.
Your whole point is that a privacy focused app store should provide privacy focused donation methods… which crypto is…
Its also rife with scams and incredibly volatile.
Sure, but again to your point, it’s a privacy friendly way to donate.
There are lots of other private ways to donate that don’t involve scams.
What would you use instead? PayPal? Which was literally founded by fascist Elon Musk and democracy-hating Peter Thiel?
Anything that involves banks? Literally centralized financial institution that are subject to extensive KYC/AML regulation?
GitHub Sponsors at least doesn’t charge fees, so it’s the best of these options. But crypto, especially XMR, is objectively better for accepting donations online.

Looks like they accept monero and bitcoin among other crypto, did they not have that before?
This looks like an ad. What’s wrong with F-droid?
A lot. Including significant security issues. https://privsec.dev/posts/android/f-droid-security-issues/
Nothing wrong with it. It is just an alternative, for those who are more concerned about privacy and security than an average user.
