I saw a video on YouTube that people on the stopdrinking subreddit were talking about. Kurzgesagt’s Alcohol video and now I’m fucking terrified. I already suffer from health anxiety and that video sent me over the edge.

I’m a 38 year old male and I’ve been binge drinking on weekends for about 20 years. I’m terrified that I’ve done irreparable damage to me my body. I’ve had liver enzymes tested and they were slightly above normal, nothing too crazy. I actually stopped drinking for a month once and they were normal. However, I’m still freaking out.

while alcohol is destructive, if you stop it, and excess sugar, your body will recover. later down the line maybe, but it will. 20 years without alcohol here, good luck.

It doesn’t stick until suddenly one day it does stick. Stay with it! I had so many Day 1s, but today is my first day 4874. Health returned over time, these days I feel great and any accumulated damage from the Dirty Decades doesn’t show up in tests. 🙏

The second best time to stop drinking is right now.

One suggestion for you since you mentioned your age and worrying about your health. Consider lifting weights if you don’t already. I started a few years ago and it has done wonders for me, including becoming my primary reason to stop drinking. Can’t drink the night before a workout, because it will affect my lifts. Can’t drink afterwards either because it will affect my recovery… When friends offer me drinks I just say “Ah I would but I’m staying clean, you know” and then flex my traps at em, they get it

I lift for maintenance, not to gain. I play ice hockey, so I have a HIIT routine that I do, and then I’ll do a whole body routine a few times a week. I’ll send it to you if you want to critique it?

Oh this is pretty good, it seems like you’ve got quite a bit of volume in there and most of your bases are covered. The one thing that stands out is you don’t seem to have a hip hinge: deadlift or RDL once a week would do it. How long does it take you to do all this?

I usually take about 40 minutes to do the weight lifting portion. About 60 minutes all said and done. It’s not too intense, as 35 lbs each is pretty light for me. I’m overweight now, but when I was younger I was a real athlete. I want to get back to being that way.

What I settled on was in a similar vein - 3x a week full body workouts. But it’s barbell based, focusing on compound lifts as they’re the biggest bang for your buck, and then a couple of accessories with dumbbells, takes about an hour. And there’s built-in progression so it’s always grinding upwards. I started out at about 175lbs bodyweight at 25% body fat, couple years later I’m at 210lbs and around 16% body fat. Never felt better.

To track everything I use the boostcamp app, its free and loaded with a bunch of programs. The ones I’m talking about are 531 and tactical barbell

I never wanted to give up drinking completely, but going to the gym had the same side effect for me. If you can’t drink the day before nor the day of, and you go 3/4 times a week, you pretty much automatically stop drinking. Since, I stopped exercising so often, but my alcohol consumption is still way down (1 beer a week versus around 2-3 evenings of 3-4 beers a week).
