Despite a federal protection law, Brazil’s Atlantic Forest lost a Washington, D.C.-sized area of mature forest every year between 2010 and 2020, with most of the deforestation occurring illegally on private lands for agriculture.
The Atlantic Forest is a critical biodiversity hotspot that supports 70% of Brazil’s GDP while serving nearly three-quarters of the country’s population.
Most of the Amazon exploiters are not even from Brazil. So of course since the land now belongs to external agents the country’s laws don’t do jack shit.
This is not about the Amazon. It’s about the Atlantic forest (mata atlântica), which spans most of the country south-to-north right through the most inhabited areas by the east coast, essentially at the opposite side of the country.
Whoops, did not realise. My bad. Most news about Brazil and deforestation default to the Amazon, so that’s where my head went.
