This app is a small jewel:
- offline translation thanks to firefox translation engine
- OCR on images with tessercat
- overlay of translated text on the original image -> awesome!
It’s still a young app, but it’s really important to go towards de-googling!

Small correction to the title: Lens is a lot broader than OCR translation. It also does landmark and plant identification, QR code reading, and even things like creating calendar events from tickets.
A FOSS tool that does one of these tasks is great, but it’s a little misleading to present it as a replacement for Lens as a whole.

I didn’t know about the calendar thing either tbh. I’ve mostly used it to try to find the original source of a meme or movie still. I swear it’s gotten worse at that over time though.
