So is the hemp to stop small arms fire?
Or at least reduce its velocity when it reaches the sensitive bits of the train.
They used hemp because the Royal Navy still used hemp ropes at this time, meaning they had a supply of it on-hand. Needs must!
I heard hemp ropes were unparalleled in their quality. It’s interesting that they weren’t worried about anti material shells. Or didn’t think any armor would be enough for that.
The Boers were largely lightly armed - a bunch of farmers with rifles.
Unfortunately for the British troops in the war, they were a bunch of farmers who were good shots with their rifles.
No ‘less bad’ guys in the war, though. Racist Boers who wanted more African land vs. British imperialists.
