Ulysses was certainly an American because he was raised by an abolitionist but was himself kinda like about slavery despite fighting for the union. Literally bought William Jones (his slave) from his father-in-law to build a cabin and then freed him like a year later. Why Ulysses?? Why?!? You could’ve had an (relatively at least, if you ignore the whole native american/dominican republic portion of his presidency) untarnished
