New offences for people assaulting or threatening service workers are expected to be introduced in time for the Christmas shopping rush.

The Allan government will introduce new laws aimed at protecting workers in service jobs to parliament today.

Assaulting or threatening to assault workers in retail, hospitality, fast food or transport will carry a five year jail term as a penalty.
