Tutanota has, to my knowledge, never complied with French law enforcement and put people in jail. Hapless radlib climate activists, by the way. People who were just stupid kids. Now they’re gonna rot in prison.

Admitting you don’t really care is free, and so is being more serious.

I don’t know what you mean about rotting in prison, the linked article says their proton accounts were disabled for a month or so. I’m not saying I support that, but I’d also like to know if there’s really something that much more nefarious that happened.

There are no perfectly ethical choices in capitalism. I’m sure Tuta has or will have something to object to on some level. I feel the best thing I can do is make the best choices and impact I can, and to me getting a dozen people to leave Google for Proton is still better than getting one person to leave Google for Tuta.

I was referring to the first major incident about Proton that got reported. They have statistics about their law enforcement compliance published now. Didn’t check the other posted article. At the time people acted like a dealbreaker, but the shills have beaten you into compliance due to your pathetic need for validation. Frankly, whatever light I shine in here is my mistake. Westoids don’t deserve clarification on anything. What awaits you is confusion, darkness, and trust in those who hurt you.

They also use the same shady tactic as Discord, asking for phone number verification after some time has passed when you sign-up via email. This is in order to expand how much metadata they collect. You are using more CIA dogshit. Have fun.

Probably, but there are so many actually good and/or European email providers out there. Just please stop promoting the one known bad (or at least questionable) one.

A good example would be mailbox.org

I do support alternatives like Mailbox and Tuta and hope they grow. I also think the complaints about Proton are a bit overblown, especially the “trump supporting” tweet. But I would like to look more into the account closure story.

Proton is (so far that I’ve seen) the only alternative to the Gsuite that is polished and complete enough for non-tech people like my extended family to most easily adapt to. Since my goal is getting people off of Google, not getting them onto a perfect alternative, I continue to promote Proton… Hope that makes sense!

They may be overblown, but when I have the option to select a provider that didn’t have an unhinged CEO, why wouldn’t I just select that option? I’m also sure that there are many people there that don’t share his ideology, but I’m making a decision for me, not them.

When you’re making a recommendation for (extended) family, this may change things. But my problem is with people just throwing this in as a default recommendation. Without any note or qualification.

Just cause it’s “better than Google” doesn’t make it good. These days that’s basically every thing that isn’t Google, meaning that’s an incredibly low bar.

I’m aware they are doing this, but don’t consider this a (big) problem. I personally don’t intend to change email hosts often, or ever if possible. As for mails I’m receiving, the number of contacts I have from there is negligible.

Also note that this is a non-issue when you’re using them to host mails for your own domain, which is also always an option at no extra cost.

good luck finding an email provider that stands above laws.

oh, that’s google. but not to your benefit of course.
