Kind of tangential, but the Reddit community I was in made sure to auto-block all mentions of people asking where to find food/diapers and what gas stations have gas and where people could charge their phone during Helene. Mods said they were just following in r/ashevilles footsteps, but it felt like it did way more harm to real people looking for help for the sake of keeping the subreddit tidy. Fuck Reddit and especially fuck those subreddits.

I also built a Gopher/Gemini text-only website around that time for completely different reasons, but I agree that more websites should be like this. Half the time I can’t load modern web pages is because my network ad blocker breaks load bearing trackers. I’ve since switched to the Obsidian plugin DigitalGarden, which lets me convert obsidians markdown structure to a website in a way that’s super simple to a non-web-dev like me.

Holy shit, that is infuriating. Would hate for actually helping your neighbors to get in the way of memes, venting, and the one-millionth picture of a sunset that month.
