I have always wondered what material is the ceiling made of below so it wont rust. Is it just a normal sheet metal roof panel with a plastic coating, where the soil is applied carefully to ensure the coating won’t be damaged?

That’s not grass. Look at the texture or just the color of actual vegetation in the background.

That looks like some kind of climbing plant, rooted on the ground. But I’m open to the possibility it’s just AI.

Anyway, the one roof without the plants isn’t built in a way where those plants can ever grow. And the grass on the floor just don’t grow this much when shadowed.

Either way, rooting the plants on the ground solves a lot of the problems with that kind of design.

Other than being pretty (which I fully admit is already a benefit), is this actually doing any good for the environment? Isn’t that just grass?

It helps with air pollution, noise reduction, sustaining a healthy urban ecosystem, and, depending on construction, may also help with water and heat management.

Green walls are a similar initiative, I think most of the functional appeal is shared with this kind of project.

This type of thing frequently reduces the heat island effect of parking lots due to the shade, provides some level of plant life for insects and maybe birds, and reduces the amount of water runoff from the lot by absorbing some of the rainfall.

It is greater than zero, but since it is just grass it is mostly just the shade and water runoff mitigation in practice. Both of those only apply to a small portion of the lot as well.

It does significantly benefit the cars and the drivers, far more than any environmental positives.

I dont want to say this isn’t also a good idea, but I think covering all open parking lots with solar panel awnings is a better idea.
