Why do some people advertise their things only as “alternative to”?

I don’t know that other thing. So what is your thing?

It’s an app that helps you split bills with other people. Quite helpful if you have a lift club or shared accommodation.

For example, if Person A, B and C all buy $10, $20 and $30 groceries for the house, it will calculate who owes how much and to whom. Throw in extra bits like Person A borrowing $5 from Person B and it starts getting complex.

A popular app where you can share and split expenses with a group of people. It’s very useful for example when you are on vacation with 3 or more people and everybody pays something. At the end the app tells you how much everyone has to pay everyone back.

Split wise was great in the past, but it was enshittified pretty badly. That’s why alternatives are always welcome!

Hosting your bill anywhere is just waiting for your data to be sold or leaked. You can keep your split bill fully encrypted and only shared between the people that you trust: https://webxdc.org/apps/#durian-splitbill

Usable in XMPP based Cheogram, or Delta Chat for e2ee bill splitting.

When I started living in a shared house I wrote a Python+GTK app to split bills. It worked but it’s shonky as hell. It was my first time writing a database schema!

What do you feel is missing from the explanations that were already provided in the comments?

a non free alternative I can recommend is Tricount. It’s best feature is that is also works offline.
