I never really understood Riker’s objection here. In general I agree with his point, but his objection felt shoehorned into the episode. This wasn’t about an M5 style computer taking over everything. Just helm and thrusters for a bit. And what choice did they have?
It’s out of character. Seems more like fodder for the sake of dramatic story. Added impact to Geordie’s solution to escape manually without computer assistance.
