Hi everyone 19m here New York State. I recently was set up with a job as a dishwasher at a family owned restaurant from some connections I had with a friend who used to work there some years ago. I started on Monday and I asked the owner about clocking out for break and he said they are relaxed back about breaks and don’t do that and New York State allows a 15 minute break every 2 hours apparently, even though I work 8-9 hours which makes me entitled to a 30 minute meal break. Today I took a full break as I was working 8 hours, the owner was upset and said, “that’s quite a long break”(my break was 6:17 to 6:47) and I stated New York State allows a 30 minute break but he cut me off mid sentence and said, “that’s irrelevant, it’s a holiday, it’s busy and we need you”. I won’t be returning except on Friday to collect my check.

Edit: Just to further clarify since people on reddit think they know everything, I was TOLD/given permission to go on break because 3 of us were in the dish pit, one left at 7 and I was told by the boss to go on break before the one guy left at 7 so it just wouldn’t be one person alone. Y’all mad toxic 😭
