You know, they committed a terrible act. But maybe dead naming the person in all of this doesn’t really help the message at all. Not showing sorry for the short Shooter. But at least identify them correctly.
I’d prefer if they weren’t named at all tbh. No point giving them any level of infamy.

I had to dig to find out what the “trans” part of this was, because the article really isn’t clear about it — nor is it truthful.
Another article quotes the Mounted Police saying Jesse had been “born a biological male … who approximately six years ago began to transition as female, and identified as female”, which makes it really fucking stupid to keep doubling down on referring to her as male. Not that shooting anyone over it is justifiable, of course, but I can’t imagine anyone going “yeah, this’ll help with the type of mental issues that drove someone to the point of violence.”
Christ on a cracker, that’s not even about the individual person at this point. That’s just about respecting trans people’s identity in general. She’s a murderer all the same, but identity shouldn’t be a privilege extended to just some people.
The very least they could have done to resolve whatever ambiguity they may feel about the issue is to use neutral pronouns (they) and designations (child).
But also, yeah, OpenAI should be responsible for the shit people do on their platform and the way their platform interacts with those people. If you’re gonna sniff people’s conversations anyway, might as well do some good with it. Isn’t safety the common excuse for surveillance anyway?
My reading of the situation is she’d been socially transitioning for 6 years, mentions of her not being on hrt and this after she’s turned 18; i think she was systematically denied transition care after being put off while a minor (most likely her guardian which was one of the victims) and this was a mental breakdown due to the denial of real mental health and lifesaving care that transition would have given her in addition to living with the baseline transphobia of others
I’m not qualified or familiar enough to do a root cause analysis. What you say sounds and matches my own suspicions. It wouldn’t be the first case of someone with un- or poorly-treated health issues snapping. I don’t know if this is the whole story here and I don’t want to speculate too much.
Either way, I find it disgustingly disrespectful to slap “trans” in every fucking headline and cite the RCMP saying “…identified as female”. The spokesperson referred to her as female in his update, so why the fuck are the journalists that clearly saw that conference and are reporting on it not doing the same?
But if this lack of recognition contributed (again, I agree that it probably did), then broadcasting “we don’t give a fuck about your pain” isn’t gonna help people grappling with the question “then why should I give a fuck about yours?”
It would be respectful and pragmatic to refer to her as… well, “her”.
