Congress can bypass the president if they want. Since Republicans control both chambers this shutdown continues at their desire.

It’s not getting passed in Congress specifically because Trump told Thune that he would publicly go after any Republicans who supported it.

I think I read reporting where he even asked Thune for names of any of the Senators who supported the idea behind closed doors, but I could be mistaken on the part, so definitely don’t take my word on that specific detail.

Right… Except impeachment was never on the cards for this congress, but a bill to resume funding the rest of DHS, was, which is what this article is about…

Hence the original comment. The point is Republicans are making this happen. They don’t have to, they have options and power to stop this. They just don’t stop it, and that’s on them.

We can play “oh but actually Republicans have no spine and won’t do anything” all we want, but at the end of the day they made this problem and they’re the reason it’s continuing to be a problem.

Except ICE is fully funded, and it’s the deal. Republicans were willing to support would have been a good win for the Democrats, and the people.

Unfortunately for Trump, not doing the deal, is also politically viable for the Democrats, as the airports devolve further into chaos.
