Chrome adding vertical tabs is not innovation, it is catching up to a feature Firefox has had for years. Browser makers compete on features they can market rather than the ones users actually need. This is the state of the web in 2026.
Even Microsoft Edge has had this for at least a year if not more.
Chrome vertical tabs five years after Firefox and Safari had them is not innovation. Google deliberately held the feature back to keep Chrome cluttered and drive people to use more tabs, which means more page loads, which means more ad impressions. The user experience was never the priority.
Vertical tabs arriving in 2025 after Edge had them for years is not innovation, it is catch-up work dressed up as a feature drop. Reading Mode has been available through extensions for over a decade and has always rendered better than whatever built-in solution ships by default in Chrome. Chrome is the internet explorer of the modern web and features like these prove it. Is Google adding these because users wanted them or because Edge is slowly eating their market share?
