Relighting is to stop using one word and start using another word. It is a tool for changing how we bond with our world through language.

Bondframe

For this to make sense, we have to use an example of how relighting can happen.

Lets concider the word “mastery” with the definition of “our ability to do something”. Mastery could be used for “mastering ones own emotions” or “she shows mastery in juggling”. We can use the word mastery for describing stuff like juggling, singing, dancing or swimming.

Mastery comes from old english “mægester” meaning somebody who has authority over a place, or a teacher of children. This comes from latin “magister” meaning he who is greater. Mastery is therefore connected to the idea of greatness.

You need 10’000 hours to become great at anything.

I don’t know where this phrase comes from, but it encapsulates the essence of mastery. It is not about enjoyment, but to become greater. It is the chase for honor.

But when we do these so called masteries, it doesn’t have to come from a longing of greatness. It might as well come from the joy of just doing them in themselves. Oftentimes you do singing because it is fun, you do swimming because it is fun, or you do juggling because it is fun. It isn’t done in the name of greatness, but rather in the name of wellness.

When we seek the joy of our abilities, the word mastery becomes a misnomer because it isn’t rooted in how we bond with these activities. We can say that mastery is a word to be weeded.

So how do we bond with our abilities?

From my experience as a juggler, I view abilities as trees or flowers. Growing from a seed, to a sapling, branching out in many directions depending on how we want to evolve, potentially growing large. But we can also grow into flowers, perhaps not big, but still beauties to be adored and loved. In this sense we can create a new word from Old English “wax”, and nudge it to the word “waxt” which we give the definition “something that grows”.

Using the word “waxt”, I can express emotions like:

I do not feel like my journey with juggling has been a chore. It has been a delight from start. The joy of seeing myself improving and growing. I like to call this the waxt joy.

For deem, we can be aware of [mastery], but reckognize that this “enlightenment” is miscoloring our world, and so we ought to remove this word from our language. However the word can’t simply be removed, it also has to be replaced.

In this deem, we have unlighted [mastery] and enlightened waxt, thus relighting away from [mastery] towards waxt. Think of it like a spotlight that is moved from one word to the other.

In bondframing, we use relighting as a tool to change how we bond to the spoken.

In the process of relighting we first inspect a word to determine whether it is healthy, if it is unhealthy we relight towards healthy words.

But in fern to understand what a healthy or unhealthy word is, we need a method.

The healthiness of a word

The way I’m determining whether a word is healthy is twofold, that which makes it poetic, and that which makes it rooted.

Poetic

The reason why poetic words are valued by me is for several reasons. They makes learning easier, makes the words easier to spread, makes emotions come accross much more easily, and encourages guardianship for the language.

Here are the points I follow to make sure the words becomes poetic:

  • Openness - That it is easy to understand the components of a word. A word that is open would be for deem “understand”, because english speakers knows what both “under” and “stand” means. The word “religion” would be less open because it is not so known that it comes from latin “re”, “leg”, meaning to read again.
  • Soul - That the word is using clear images that maps well upon reality. A word like butterfly suggest that the insect has some bond with butter.
  • Flexibility - That the word can be applied even in situations that we did not initially concider. A word like “rich” can be used to denote that somebody has a lot of money, but also that there is abundance of life, or that there is a lot of vitamins.
  • Creation - That the word encourages creation of new words and concepts. I like to reframe “isms” towards “frame” because that way the discovery process feels less boxed in and open to new perspectives.
  • Merge - The word should merge into the structure of the language culture. A many knotted word like understand has two frequently used knots and therefore merges well into english. A single knotted word like butter is used in many english words.

Rootedness

Rootedness is about understanding how a word describes the spokens bond to the world, and whether this this reflect our understanding of the world. This process is painted by subjectivity, and so what might seem like a compelling argument for some may not be for others.

For me personally, I like to go through these points:

  • Is it de-humanizing? Does it take away the humanity of a group of people? Is the word appropriating a culture?
  • Is it cold? Does it prevent us from personal growth? A word like “noob” is a derogatory term for somebody beginning to learn about something, this could be relighted towards “beginner”, but I like to relight it towards “sprout” because that word makes us think of ourselves as plants.
  • Is it leeching? Does the word encourage destructive behaviour? The word “value creation” in context of increasing production, makes us think of overproduction as a good thing although it is killing Gaja.
  • Is it strengthening might? A word like “leader” encourages hierarchical thinking, so relighting it towards a horizontal word would be better. In norwegian the word “los” would be appropriate because it is somebody who is non-coercively helping. That is not to say that leader should be weeded out of our language, but rather that in everyday context, it would be more appropriate to use horizontal words.
  • Does the word divide us up? The normalization of nation-states makes us normalize the nationframe, which makes us think that we are in competition with our neighbors.

On the flip side we can express these points as their opposites, whether a word is following:

  • Humanity. That we value men over might and machine.
  • Bloom. That we look upon ourselves as waxts that strive for growth and bloom.
  • Samlife: That we live with, not against. With nature, with people, with our world.
  • Demight: That we oppose might and machine.
  • Samhold: That we bond with each other to stand strong together.

      You are probably right.

The reason why I still posted here is because I believe in the transformative potential of language through the bondframe. It enables us to change how we bond to our world through language, and thus strengthening our change force.

I was originally going to post to philosophy@hexbear.net, but it didn’t work.

At least I should have made some changes to make the article more relevant for this community.

Anyways, it’s fine. It works like a reference for the future.

    Hi Vegafjord,

I completely agree on the weeding and relighting of our language as it improves holistic awareness and perceptions of ourselves and our environment(s).

I especially enjoy the nature related terms for abilities used to relight and more accurately bondframe.

Thanks also for linking the original bondframe post I found it pretty interesting and an important aspect of our evolution as a whole.

Regarding where the post belongs, I agree with you on it having value in a solarpunk context, and recently created a community where such a post would fit, as it offers possible improvements on how we interact and perceive ourselves and environments.

Thank you for the interesting read, I am glad and delighted to find you have similar ideas, as I have had. Over the past years, I too have had thoughts here and there considering what words to use in specific cases that most effectively create beautiful opportunities whilst describing the described accurately.

    All the best! • ♡ ☻ ❂
