From Chris-Lisa Thomison

Introducing the wee “Little Hoot” aka Pumpkin (as named by Gap Creek elementary students).

Pumpkin/Little Hoot was found grounded after a rotten tree fell.

He’s only a few days old.

This is the tiniest Screech ever brought to us.

He will be in an incubator for a good while.

The good news is he’s doing very well. Eating and staying warm and snug.

Big thanks to the kind folks who found him.

Poor little thing probably hasn’t even fully rested after hatching itself.

I used to think birds popped out of the egg in a few moments, but in reality it can take a baby bird up to 24 hours from the pup (the first poke through the shell and it takes its first breath) to being free from the egg. What a marathon for every newborn to undergo!

I will keep my eyes out for updates! This is the only new pic since this initial post.

At first, I thought you were talking about its eyes since they are so visible without the feathers, and I was going to say “yes, owl eyes are very proportionally large. If we had eyes like that, they would be grapefruit or softball sized.”

Then I went and look closer at the photo and saw you were referring to something else! 😆

I guess technically those would be the butt cheeks, which is still funny. Their legs have 3 segments, unlike our 2. If this were a chicken, those would be the thigh portions.
