    Google can track you even if you don’t use any of it’s services or products. Beginning with half the websites in internet, most from the US, use googleanalytics, google-tagmanager and sending data to Alphabet, adding information from Cloudflare and also mobile data, among others. Not so easy to avoid Google, less using YT, only possible to avoid the worst spying. One measure is to use EU apps and services insted of those from the US.

        If all the good content is still there, people will stay there. Open and ethical platforms need to have content to become an alternative. I hope this content is hosted on PeerTube and other platforms as well.

          They need to solve paying creators and also what happens when if they get big. How do they scale. Hate YouTube all you want it costs a lot of money to run it and I don’t see federated service replacing it. Also the fact everything us still up there I see that being hard in federation.

            I don’t think it needs to be solved, they motivate people to support through other means and have a dedicated support button. Sponsorships are also a thing.

            Regarding scaling, as the name implies, PeerTube makes use of Peer-to-Peer technology to reduce the load of platforms and it’s federated without an “official” instance, which allows content creators to spread across different instances, spreading the load it comes with.

        Step 3: Stop using android unless it’s Graphene or something like it that’s de-googled. Because a lot of Google’s tracking is done through the play store.

              The terminology is a bit confusing, so let’s clarify. What you really have is just one mailbox, not many. It acts as a catch-all mailbox for all mail sent to any addresses under your domain. You just need to set up folders and sorting rules to keep things tidy.

              So let’s say you bought cool.tech and you made a single mailbox like inbox@cool.tech. Nobody sends mail there specifically, but that’s where it all goes because it’s a catch-all address. All the other addresses mail is sent to were never explicitly created, but they can receive anyway.

              Instead, you get mail to addresses like ScammyAppName@cool.tech and iJustWantedToDownloadThisOneFile@cool.tech, etc. Anything sent to those addresses gets sorted into two separate folders within the only mailbox you’ll ever need. If you want the same email to appear in two folders, you would need to make a copy of it.

          There’s simply not even close to the amount of content amassed on YT, and on Peertube’s case (and perhaps on the Fediverse itself), having to navigate through instances makes onboarding not as seamless as the alternative. On the other hand, I think YT’s monetization scheme makes it a more attractive platform at the moment, which further contributes to the extent of its user base.

            • monetization exists on PeerTube exists and is not based on advertising (which has terrible side effect on privacy)

            So I think if one is looking for PeerTube to be a copy of YouTube in terms of both content and monetization they will be disappointed… but also maybe that’s the problem in itself. YouTube monetization is damaging (forcing to be a popularity contest) and bring poor content in. Sure some very few content creator are still on it but a lot already moved away. The assumption though is that there is a link between popularity and quality. It’s time to reconsider.

              Look, I’d love for Peertube to rival Youtube (and it’s a growing platform, who knows what will happen in the future), but like you said, there are very few content creators and mainstream personalities there. Try looking up a song, a clip from a popular TV show, a game walkthrough, a stand up from your favorite comedian, a silly meme, whatever, and if you find anything on Peertube, that’s impressive, but on Youtube you’ll have dozens upon dozens of examples. The difference in scale over popular content makes any usability comparison right now just wishful thinking. This has been by far YT’s (and maybe on a larger scale Google’s) strength: everything/everyone is already there, so why go anywhere else, where not nearly the amount of people will be watching and bringing in money based on those views.

              Still, I’m hopeful people will accept alternative platforms more and more, with how shitty the YT experience has been on the official client and I enjoy discovering new channels I can follow on Peertube, but as of now, I don’t think most people could ditch one for the other, realistically.
