The death toll from the earthquake continues to rise—as of June 26, over 900 people have been reported dead and thousands injured. The US Geological Survey states that there is a 42% probability of between 10,000 and 100,000 deaths. Donations will go to support first responders and recovery efforts by grassroots organizations and movements. Emergency response on the ground is impacted by the severe limitations imposed by US sanctions, which have made it hard to obtain medicine and other essential materials needed for rescue efforts and to keep vital infrastructure running. At the same time, the US government is exploiting this crisis by deploying the US military’s Southern Command to “coordinate” the earthquake response—a thinly veiled pretext for putting troops on Venezuelan soil and reasserting US dominance over the region. But the people of the United States want something different: to stand with our neighbors in Venezuela as they seek urgent relief from a natural disaster compounded by years of US sanctions and hybrid war.
