      It’s brute force software programming. Their hardware is insufficient and they don’t have actual AI, so they are trying to program every scenario and it’s taking many years and will never be finished.

    Everyone in the story has ties to Tesla and thus reason to lie. We don’t know who has what motives and so must discount everyone.

    Meanwhile the real data must exist by now but I’ve never seen anyone independent who understands statistics talk about it.

    if a car using full self drive causes an accident, whose to blame? the human in the car (who wasn’t driving). or Tesla?

    if someone dies in the accident then who goes to prison?

      Right now, the person driving the vehicle. All self driving, except for a few edge cases in Germany, requires supervision by the person sitting behind the wheel.

      INB4 Tesla starts hiring sacrificial workers (mor sacrificial than their regular workers I mean) who take the blame for “FSD” failures. Job involves signing a contract, getting some money and someday, maybe soon, maybe never, facing jail for manslaughter.

      legit a trolley problem.

      your tesla in FSD has decided to plough into a crowd of people.

      if you grab the wheel to swerve, you will hit someone on the pavement.

      if you let the FSD tesla hit a crowd, tesla is responsible (in theory).

      if you grab the wheel to swerve, and hit someone else, you are now responsible.

      do you let a crowd die, because the tesla wanted that, and they take the blame? or do you grab the wheel to minimize the damage, but then become liable for the resulting death? even though your chose the lesser of two evils

        Right now the driver has the duty of supervising constantly the system, so in no case is Tesla to blame (legally)

    Can’t both be true? Per capita, aren’t self driving cars causing fewer accidents than human drivers? I feel like it’s possible that the accidents caused by self driving cars are dumber and more obviously and easily preventable by a human, and that there aren’t enough safety nets and that they shouldn’t be legal because of these reasons… but also… human drivers suck. In addition to people who shouldn’t be driving in the first place (drunk, elderly, sleep deprived, etc.) there’s a billion things that easily distract people that machines aren’t susceptible to.

    This feels like comparing car accidents to plane accidents. You’re MUCH more likely to get in a car accident, but more people are afraid of flying, since every plane accident is newsworthy on an international scale and most car accidents (including fatal ones) are (sadly) commonplace and not always even covered by local news.

      Self driving cars are only allowed to drive in sunny Pheonix and California and give up if anything gets hard. Tesla’s self driving bails if it’s panics just before the accident so that Tesla can say it was the operators fault. This skews the numbers.

    It’s such a shame that honestly pretty awesome cars with leading driving assistance software are constantly miss-advertised and ruined by the man in charge. So absurd.

      They are poorly built cars. Driving assistance just masks the real problem of too many drivers on roads who should not be licensed and the joke of car licence tests.

        If you look into the recent model years, they are above average in terms of build quality. Reliability looks also pretty good according to to statistics. Even the most basic driving assistance enhances safety for anyone, and Tesla FSD, as idiotic as the name is, is very good and definitely safer than the average human at the wheel (who must anyway always monitor the situation and take over if needed, so it’s a summation of systems). If you compare price-to-features, no-one is close to Tesla right now. That’s the reason why they sell a huge amount of cars. And I hate it, but it’s true.
