Eight weeks ago, I vibe-coded a running training app. I’d never really been a runner, but wanted to change things up a bit.
I was already in decent shape from light boxing, lifting, and doing some cardio, but running for more than 10 minutes just wasn’t something I usually do
I built the app in Python. Nothing fancy, just a program that did what I wanted, spit out data, and charts and was personalized to my body style and running gait, and length of my stride.
The app gave me goal times, pace goals, etc. After each workout, I entered the distance, time, and whether it felt easy, moderate, or hard. blah blah blah
It saved everything to a local CSV file and adjusted the next week slightly. Gave me pace stats, tips on when to speed up, when to slow down, etc.
My first week included a couple of short runs By week five, I could run five miles without stopping.
Yesterday I finished my first 10K w a time that put me in the top 10 percent of finishers on this run.
Totally surprised when I saw the result because my main goal was just to finish without being last or falling apart during the last mile. haha
The coolest part is that I built the app to be personal because I made it around how I actually train. And I don’t know to program worth a shit. It was all vibe-coded! :)
8 weeks isn’t a long time to train, and probably not healthy for someone who isn’t fit, but hey my vibecoding session turned me into a guy who never really ran into someone who can finish a respectable 10K.
I wouldn’t have paid anyone to program this. I wouldn’t have paid for an app to do this. I wouldn’t have paid a trainer to do this. And there are plenty of free apps that do this. I don’t plan to sell it. I don’t plan to offer it. I don’t plan to show it to anyone. It wouldn’t be any use to anyone else, since I made it so personalized anyway.
But I wanted my own personalized app, and so I fucking made it. Vibe-coding is the future and it’s fucking awesome!
NOTE: Hate-boner AI downvoters, serial downvoters, and my personal stalker are allowed to downvote here without fear of a ban hammer. I wanted to give them a safe place too. Nothing will change my mind about vibe-coding or AI anyway. :)
It’s nice to see so many people crafting custom tooling that makes a real difference in day to day life.
That plebs can just summon up novel apps with blackjack and hookers to custom specs and avoid crapware on proprietary app stores is cool to see in action.
Thank you!
And yes, this is such a great time to be fucking alive and playing around with tech. Just like you said, blackjack and hookers. It was awesome! Even easier to do than I thought. I have heard stories about shit code, app not working, etc.
But then I also saw that now the majority of coders use AI in their regular day now. Lemmy wants us to believe that it’s all done by hand or it’s shit. But the very Lemmys who say that, are also the programmers using it.
So hey, if it’s good enough for the real world, then good enough for me. So I legit just told it what I wanted it to do. The very first version worked fine, I used it, got some ideas for what other stuff I wanted, then told it that.
It’s legit so fucking easy and good now to program with AI, that the Lemmys who rage against it sound like “get off my lawn” Boomers to me now.
And also, hypocritical. The vast majority of Lemmy users are programmers. And most of them are fucking using AI every single day. But they come on here and pretend they don’t. It’s bullshit. They use fucking AI more than most.
I’m sure the really advanced shit still needs hand-holding by people who know what they’re doing. But this easy little fitness stuff and fairly simple programs, AI make it so fucking simple and cheap to build. Only when through 2 version, and both worked the first time I used them. I just wanted some addons, and that made a 2nd version.
This is a great equalizer, because poor plebes like me have access to some of the world’s greatest tech and ideas now. What a time to be alive!
I wouldn’t be too upset with those who are fearful, it’s human nature to see an evangelical style outcry when novel tech appears…don’t taste the fruit, don’t use the fire etc or all hell will break loose upon earth. On the socials it’s trending up there with Jesus in terms of things that will make us rue the day any moment now.
Socrates said the enshitification would happen if the plebs starting relying on writing instead of themselves, he was right. Things got even worse in the wake of Guttenberg’s press drowning the world in generic mechanical maleficarum, then computers arrived making the distribution and consumption of nothing but soulless mechanical slop on a grand scale day to day life that was futile to resist.
Will be interesting to see how many really dig in and avoid connecting to anything based around the linux kernel since Linus recent statement on the matter:
Fair points. I love the tech, but I don’t think it will save the world or anything. I see it as a powerful tool, and it’s all in how you use it. The people who use it for bad shit, where always gonna do bad shit regardless of tools.
Linus basically said, if you don’t like it, don’t use it, but otherwise stop bitching. Am I reading that right?
Yeah, it’s novel toolkits. The religious aspect I mean more those willing to die on some ‘no ai’ hill whilst trying to be chronically online and calling llm’s the great whore of babylon kinda stuff.
Linus saying ‘stop whining’ is one aspect, the other is that the kernel is knee deep in LLM’s and this is only going to continue to grow…those against so called ‘aislop’ or 'vibe coding; are as Linus notes, gonna have to fork or write their own.
From what I’ve seen online it seems easier to attack someone that’s made a period tracker app on chatgpt than it is to fork the 40 millions lines of kernel code the whinger is relying upon and doesn’t understand.
The religious aspect I mean more those willing to die on some ‘no ai’ hill whilst trying to be chronically online and calling llm’s the great whore of babylon kinda stuff.
So much of that on Lemmy! lol
I actually love the idea of coding for real, and for fun, I do plan on learning to code. But having a real life makes it a very long term goal for me. And honestly, vibe-coding has made me more interested in learning it.
But let’s face it. Not everyone has the mental capacity to actually code, even though they may have some great ideas. I am one of those people. I’m average intelligence, but def not one of the super smart guys who would be able to logically think out and code anything from scratch. My brain just doesn’t work that way. So AI allows people like me to create things that we’d couldn’t have done before.
Even tho my workout program is simple, the amount of time it would have taken for me to actually learn to code it from scratch would have been more time than I actually can commit to. I have wife and kids to watch over, so just not enough hours in the day for it
