He didn’t just think he’d be a good ruler, he was snorting a bunch of actual magic fairy dust and legitimately able to see the future and knew what it would take to save humanity: his own.
It’s a typical space Jesus story, so of course he’d just be another deluded space asshole, if he wasn’t really is Space Jesus in the story.

Yes, but also… while the jihad would lead to billions of deaths, the state of the galaxy at that time was so stagnant that him not acting would lead to far worse results. So Catch-22 - he was doing the best thing for the very long run, and just didn’t have the ability/strength/balls to go far enough himself.
Did he not have the balls or is drowning the universe in blood just such a momentous task that one guy and a planet of extremists can’t do it all in a single generation of time?

I seem to remember it’s a bit of both. Paul already has the problem of suddenly being able to see all the paths. To stay sane just from that point is commendable. But that’s a lot to carry. Still not as much as his sister, who never had a chance to form her own identity before being hit with knowing everything, past and future, and everyone from the past in her head.
His sister didn’t see the future.

And the past was not only from mothers, but from fathers too.

Haven’t read the last few books yet, but I believe that further into the future there’s a greater threat coming which humanity can only survive by being used to adapting and spreading through the universe.
The original books never go further into it, but essentially yes. There’s a single bit of dialogue when Paul’s son talks about hunter seeker robots exterminating mankind. But in the prequel books, during the Butlerian jihad, just before it’s defeat the enemy ai makes copies of itself and launched them to random distant stars. And mind you, this was before faster then light travel (the discovery of which is what actually helped the humans win). But presumably Omnius returns for a reckoning.

Also I just checked again and have to retract what I said about the book ends. Apparently the last chapter had Jessica consoling Chauni about the poligamy situation, which is way weaker of a final note than I remembered
But Fenrig knowing he could murk Paul and somehow being immune to Paul’s omniscience was pretty cool. I forgot I really liked that character
