The paper suggests regulation that would ban surveillance-based business models, limit big tech companies’ claims over data, and require major platforms to be licensed, with conditions attached to their continued operation.
Another possibility was giving people affected by these companies a greater say in how they are governed.

I never got why we countries don’t regulate big tech. Everything else is regulated, at least in most countries we have regulated working conditions and what companies can and can’t do, specifications of products like cars… rules on what cameras you can put up in your front yard, how your doctor or teacher needs to deal with your private information… We have competition law, GDPR if “normal” companies launch websites… Banks are highly regulated after they kept doing silly investment strategies which made them go bankrupt a few times too many…
Just big tech companies get completely free reign. All surveillance okay. We allow them to shape political discourse and entire society with their algorithms. They don’t pay taxes… With AI they’ve come to just steal stuff on a large scale… They give us pervert sunglasses, deepfakes and whatever our primitive instincts desire, for a mere $30 a month… All perfectly normal.
At least we here in Europe get cookie banners… 🤕 But come on, at least pay taxes and have some minimum standards when messing with people’s perception if reality.
