Just got on xiaohongshu the other day and am wondering why the homepage is full of such weird posts. A lot of posts asking foreigners if they are attractive and some strangely pro-US stuff everywhere, even asking if Trump actually secretly means well and has a heart of gold or something. The comments are even worse at times being outright racist, and it’s not super uncommon. Not common but not very rare either, maybe once every 10-15 posts. What’s up with that? Is it cuz my public IP is US-Based?

it goes in cycles… seems to depend a lot on what you’ve clicked in the past but they cycle through things that you may have clicked on at some point or other.

every once in a while i get a whole bunch of ‘heres how to tie knots’ videos… like… that was cool the first time i found the app, but that was over a year ago and those things still keep popping up from time to time

I kinda stopped using Rednote cause I got tired of the constant racism against indians (I’m indian btw). I was so surprised to see much of it, but at least it serves as a reminder that shitty people can exist everywhere, even in AES countries. Theres more than a billion people in China, expecting all of them to be angels or saints would be naive.

In the beginning, it happens but, if you tune your algo, you might see less of the undesirable content while maximizing the content that is to your liking. That’s what worked for me.

If you ever want to follow some DPRK content, let me know so I can share some XHS accounts here.

i’ve seen many american people talking about xhs in youtube (because they’re sick of tiktok cancer and ai slop miniseries), that’s the consequence of let american people entering without proper control to your social network

Wouldn’t surpise me if the west uses bots to try to deradicalize Xiaohongshu users, whether they are Chinese or western users

I noticed this too, when I joined in January 2025 it wasn’t too bad but slowly I began to notice more racist and questionable content being posted, primarily reposted from western tiktok. I had to leave that app because of this and it was really unfortunate because I met some friendly people from China and we were getting along very well

Mine too, I just block whoever posts racism or conspiracy theories or liberal stuff. I guess the algorithm does the rest.

I haven’t noticed it either, but I’ve not used it a lot lately. I think reporting may help but I don’t know.

Their moderation is pretty good, typically when you report something they’re actually gonna action it

my theory is that a lot of the content in english are for chinese people to learn about the west and learn english and is not actually what they consume, or maybe there’s a lot of users that can be very reactionary from other parts of asia like india, or more simply there’s still a lot of pro western/reactionary people in china
