A decade and a half of recent Tory rule is the main (not the only, but the main) reason for this.
Their austerity program and educational cuts threw working class, especially kids, into relative poverty and ignorance.
Their “hostile environment” policy entrenched xenophobia.
Their support for the far-right’s wet dreams of a Brexit referendum and a hard Brexit lent the chauvinists establishment support and a veneer of respectability.
Other reasons include constant boosting (and funding) of chauvinist social media accounts as part of Russia’s (and maybe China’s, etc) decade of hybrid warfare aimed at destabilising liberal democracies and eroding support for human rights.
A lot of journalists are still on Twitter too, I assume they’re being brain washed by all the fascist propaganda or simply emboldend. The coverage of that academic who killed himself, shows that a lot of journalists are becoming quite blatant in their racism.
Trump has also emboldened the racists internationally, and Trump aligned actors (including Musk), are pushing far right propaganda globally but also in the UK.
And as you say, there’s the whole Russia thing.
No it isnt
White, male billionaires
Agree, racism, and sexism is a problem, and one that is encouraged and facilitated by the rich…Both male and female.
Government refuses to investigate sexual abuse by Donald Trump in the UK.
Government supports one of the most racist and sexually abusive regimes in the world.
Arrests anyone calling out this racism and sexism
Can I be an optimist for a moment?
I think the right and right-wing media have made a mistake in being so open with their sexism and racism. I think they’ve gone too far and that there’s going to be a backlash.
Quick maths suggests roughly a third of the UK population is straight, white and male. So the right keep pissing off the overwhelming majority of voters. And it’s not as if straight white men are all racist homophobic misogynists. This isn’t the tv version of the '70s.
Unfortunately a lot of morons keep falling for divisive propaganda, like all the TERF stuff, but I think things will get better sooner, rather than later.
No it haven’t been normalised, there’s always going to be racists and sexists in the world, the key is to give them a good smack when they say things like that. But the laws just aren’t there, and that’s as much Labour’s fault as anyone else’s. Prior to the conservative reign of terror, labour were in power and at any point during Blair’s or Browns tenure they could have done something about it but they chose not to to.
