Steven Spielberg is a hack. He pioneered product placement by putting Reese’s Pieces in ET. And worse
Product placement pre-dates Spielberg by a century or more, and was a feature of cinema almost from day 1. Eg. the Lumiere Brother’s films featured paid product placement for Sunlight soap.
Spielberg’s movies are a bit schmaltzy for me, but he’s successful for a reason.
Soap operas (even when they were still radio shows) were sponsored and featured product placements of their sponsor’s products.
They became known as ‘soap’ operas because one was sponsored by a soap company and opera because they were easy to digest and able to miss an episode so housewives could follow along while working around the house. And they targeted housewives because they were straight ads.

You could argue he’s an early pioneer of large scale blockbuster marketing. The Jaws model was basically to advertise so heavily, that you got as many people in cinemas as possible on the opening weekend, and didn’t need to rely on word of mouth. Movies are ridiculously expensive, and heavy marketing allows them to mitigate the risk that a stinker takes down the studio.
I say stinker, but Heaven’s Gate, the movie which supposedly took down a studio, is actually quite good. But it received negative publicity, and effectively ended United Artists(Chaplin, James Bond, …) as an independent Studio.

What does this have to do with him manufacturing consent? What does that even mean? He makes sure everyone agrees to things before they do it? That doesn’t sound like a bad thing.
