In Q2 2026, when everything has gotten super expensive and budget-conscious consumers are less likely to purchase a new phone. Of course the “premium” device that costs over $1300 will have a larger share than normal, because the people who are willing to shell out that much money are the ones who are more likely to buy a new phone in Q2 2026.
A lot of the headlines are treating this as a victory for Samsung, like the S26 Ultra is a huge leap or something that has convinced consumers to spend well over a grand on a smartphone, when I feel that’s blatantly false.
S26, dang I have an old phone!
Just of note, they jumped straight from S10 to S20 to match the year number (but really, they just wanted a bigger number than the iPhones), so there is no S11 to 19 inclusive. Also, the devices (especially the “base models”) have stayed the same for ages save the incremental chip bumps. The spec sheets of the S22 and S26 are nearly identical, save for maybe the addition of “Galaxy AI ready”
If the phone works for you, don’t upgrade. And if you do need an upgrade, avoid Samsung nowadays since One UI is really bloated + locked bootloader so no custom ROM support. The Fairphone, Xperia, or (used) Pixel devices are all quite good if you want a cleaner stock OS w/ support for custom ROMs. There are also others, like HMD, Motorola, etc.
