HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 4-year-old girl is dead after investigators say she found a gun in a closet and accidentally shot herself in northwest Harris County, Texas Thursday night.

Guns, knives, hammers, cars, falling from ladders, heat stroke, etc. The gun isn’t the problem, it’s how responsible a parent is

You know what the difference is between a gun and a car or hammer or knife or ladder? A gun’s sole main purpose is to kill. All of those other things have a different main purpose, even though they could be used as a weapon.
Yes I am genuine. A gun doesn’t choose to point itself at a toddler and go off. A gun doesn’t do anything without someone making it do something except for rare occurances. A toddler doesn’t know what a gun is so for this sad situation to happen is soley due to an irresponsible adult not securing it away. All the examples I gave are things that can hurt a child due to irresponsiblity.
I don’t know what you’re thoughts are on this but your original comment sounds like you believe groups such as the NRA make up reasons to suggest that a gun isn’t ever a problem, however, in this situation it was most certainly not.
Grouping guns with the other things is silly false equivalence. A gun can be set off easily and accidentally, and it almost always results in instant severe injuries to either the toddler or their surroundings. Knife/ladder/heatstroke injuries are all things that either take time or deliberate effort. Not only can they be caught before something bad happens, they are many degrees less severe than guns. You’ll find carelessness or malice in any area/activity/weapon, but guns provide instant access to put those into action.

NRA keeps saying that guns aren’t the issue, but video games & movies are. They lobbied against federal research efforts against gun violence studies in the 90s (and continue to do so), and even accused the CDC of “anti-gun bias”. Most of their advocacy is built on shifting the blame from guns onto anything else.

The number of stories I’ve heard when living in the midwest of a complete disrespect towards gun safety…
For those of you in the midwest or south, I’m curious: do you also know of someone with a bathtub full of guns? Or was it just the lunatic grandpas of the friends I had?
Of course, this mother doesn’t have a bathtub full of guns, but a gun near children that’s not in a safe is a gun that child can use to shoot someone.
