There is a rail trail near my house that seams to be similarly constructed to a road.
It hasn’t held up well, requires continuous maintenance and additional asphalt.
I have a theory that modern road technology isn’t the best, it’s the most short term profitable. Designed to wear down and require maintenance and new purchases.

All you nits saying roman roads would be destroyed in a day by today’s cars and I’m here in Italy watching trucks drive over similar roads with just newer tech. Cobblestone roads are a thing.
They need to be maintained though, just as any other roads. Cobbles also move when something drives over them and in time it adds up.
