    Oh, man. This after people just tried help explaining what an American means when they say “liberal” and now I’m confused again…

    I was going with: left-wing says it = neoliberalism; right-wing says it = social-liberalism.

    This one doesn’t fit into either of those and liberals are all for the freedom to have guns. I’m so confused…

      That’s pretty much dead on in the US with the generalized caveat that Democrats = liberals. So you can deduce how left and right of that would define liberals.

      Democrats are politically right of Germany’s CDU party and France’s party Renaissance. Both of these parties are already center-right. So the US’s definitional “left” party is pretty much right wing. This is where you get folks saying the US is a two-party right-wing system.

      The U.S. generally isn’t so nuanced. “Liberal” = Left, “Conservative” = Right. Sure, other terms exist (e.g., neoconservative), but for knuckle dragging Americans, anything with “liberal” or “conservative” as part of the label directly means right or left.

        Sure, but what’s considered ‘left’ in the US (e.g. the democrats) is super-ultra hyper right-wing in the rest of the world. Republicans are super-ultra turbo hyper mega extreme right wing.
