I’ve experienced this. There is a group of COVID crippled kids who can’t read anything without pictures.

People who hate chapter books, I want to see their reaction to books that don’t have chapters. Just one giant wall of text. Plenty of books are like that. And I’ve never had the courage to start one.

It looks like you tried to transcribe the greentext and include the > symbols. Lemmy uses a markdown interpreter thingy, so it got formatted as a quote.

    > Typing this

    Gets this

In order to show those, put a backslash \ in front of it.

    \> Typing this

    > Gets this

    EDIT:
Also the markdown thingy is super disrespectful to newline characters (enter/return key).

    \> Typing
    \> this

    > Gets > this

In order to get it to actually put stuff on new lines you have to put two spaces after the sentence. Even the last one. I’m gonna use dashes to represent spaces on account of them being invisible otherwise.

    \> Typing–
    \> this–

    > Gets
    > this

Be sure not to double-space too fast on mobile tho as most phones take that to mean “put a period down”

When I was getting my teaching license I had a class of 11th grade honors students (though that was technically not the top level class bc you could also do an AP class above that) and the teachers I was interning under said they couldn’t assign reading homework because pretty much the entire class wouldn’t do it. So we just used a bunch of class time to read out loud to the students while they followed along in their books.

In the end it didn’t end up taking quite as much time as I thought and the students still engaged with the material, but it kinda blew my mind to be told that kids in a non-remedial class a year away from either college or jobs just basically refused to read. And this was quite some time ago, well pre-pandemic.

Jesus christ. I thought you were going to say a year away from high school, not college…

I would estimate that I did about 25% of all reading assigned to me in high school and undergraduate (by volume of pages, not assignments). I wish I could have read just about every page of it, but I did not have the time or mental capacity to.

For me, reading (a textbook) was the most mentally strenuous homework because it requires me to maintain a high level of focus the entire time I am doing it and taking a break (outside of designated chapter/section boundaries) risks losing context. Solving a set of problems is much easier. The first problem is hard because I need to look back at my notes and skim the text book to remember what problem solving approaches I am being taught. But if after solving that first problem I see that I am out of time or energy, I can easily put down the assignment and come back to it later. For the next several problems, I could simply look at how I solved the first and be 75% of the way towards solving the rest.

It does not help that professors would be selective in how many and which problems they would assign as part of homework (since they would have to grade it), but they would assign chapters to read without considering the total volume. Even worse, the most effective way to stay engaged with reading is to take careful notes, so reading would take 3 times longer.

Despite that, I have always enjoyed reading for pleasure, though I have not always been able to find the time for it.

That man is an entertainer of the highest caliber, and that self-sacrificial act done purely for the laughs is something I miss in other forums, as people “take themselves too seriously”.👌
