Came here to say this. This comment should be higher in the list. The headline is a clickbait. He’s using the pineapple as an excuse to look like a victim when the reality is that he probably was a piece of shit and got fired over a violent outburst (caused by his refusal to put pineapple on pizza).

    I don’t understand this crowd.

Pizza already has fruit in it: tomatoes.

Pizza is already a medley of toppings.

    There’s dessert pizza as well.

And just because your country is known for a thing, doesn’t mean it can’t evolve and improve over time.

And lastly, it’s funny to take sides during a barroom disagreement, but losing your job? That’s idiotic.

His position is trivial and straightforward. The same way I would refuse to use/maintain any Apple hardware if I were sysadmin. And my boss would fire me for that. And that wouldn’t change my principal position.

Don’t think the comparison tracks. Because he is there to prepare food the way the guests like it even if he doesn’t like it himself. Like if a bartender were to refuse to give me a Beer because it wasn’t brewed in accordance to the German purity law and because he is German and considers it an affront. It’s a bullshit stance as a bartender as it is for any chef to do that.

Comparison is very straightforward. You might consider this stance crazy but it exists. That guy refuses to use pineapples, I refuse to use Apple. Both of us consider ourselves “to know better than the customer”.

I think what the other commenter doesn’t get is that you and pizza guy have grown up privileged enough where you feel like you can do these things.

You on one hand maybe don’t realize how much of a privilege it is, and they on the other hand don’t get that somebody could even have that level of privilege.

Privileged enough to like A over B…? Pretty sure that applies to any culture.

I can imagine some people arguing over a cave painting style 50000 years ago.

I didn’t downvote you, but I find it perplexing that 2(!) people are confused about it the same way: No, privileged enough to not do your job and even lose it just because you don’t like it.

I don’t like Apple either, but I would never refuse to fix bugs with in our web application if they only happen in the Apple browser, or something like that.

Privilege of having my own opinion? I think even in “Glorious” Korea people have that “privilege”. They just refrain from expressing it. For safety reasons.

Privilege of risking your job over a preference. I didn’t think that one was murky.

Yes, just for ultimate confirmation, that was exactly what I meant.

And not even realizing that “doing your job even if you don’t like it” is what it’s about - what millions of people have to do - just kinda cements it even more as a privilege.

When people say “tomatoes are fruits”, they’re talking about the term “fruit” as it’s used by botanists, not how it’s used in cooking.

Are you okay with cucumber on your pizza? How about corn? Or peas? Or pumpkin? Or peanuts? Those are all fruits (according to botanists), as well.

I’m fine with pretty much anything on a pizza, as long as the combination sounds good. I just want to see if you’re consistent.

        I hare this opinion.

Italians get a lot of credit for their food, but tomatoes are a new world plant and noodles are of East Asian origin. While they might have combined the two in a delicious way [citation needed], they don’t have license to gatekeep what is and isn’t acceptable in modifying it

Tomatoes are a colonial import, not native Italian food. Why not pineapple? This man needs to spend some time reflecting.

I’m vegan and if I’d work in a supermarket and wouldn’t touch the meat products I’d also get sacked. So I just don’t work there or suck it up and do my job.

A job almost always requires compromise between employer and employee.

Reading this comment section, I’m starting to understand why Italy is the only European country with a respectable cuisine.
