Russia’s new development on the Kuril Islands aims to ‘punish’ Japan for supporting international sanctions and providing aid to Ukraine, analysts say.
Russia doesn’t need to make some weird symbolic gesture to punish Japan. Joining the sanctions was enough of a self-own for us, our economy is the worst it has ever been in my lifetime, we are in the midst of a huge energy issue and the currency is absolute trash. More and more imports are becoming non-feasible, we can’t even get orange juice anymore.
For sure, Japan needs imports to function, and cutting off the biggest commodity exporter clearly hurts Japan a lot more than it does Russia. It’s a similar problem the EU is now facing, but I imagine it’s more acute for Japan.
