  • Our food is really good, too. We have everything from all over the world and then some. One complaint I’ve heard about visiting Germany, for example, is there’s nothing but German food. The US has German food, but also Italian, French, Chinese, Thai, Ethiopian, Columbian, etc.

Some of our major cities can also be a lot of fun. There’s a bunch to see in Seattle and Washington DC, even if you don’t want to go to historic sites gooning themselves over founding fathers. New York and LA are impossible to experience in one sitting. You have to live in them for an extended period or make several visits.

Then again, you could just go visit China or India or France.

  • I’ve been playing since Mirage and Universes Beyond combined with Modern Horizons has left a bad taste in my mouth. They’ve also had more bans in Standard in around six years than the previous 25 years combined, including the initial banlist separating it from Type 1, Urza’s block, and the first Mirrodin block.

UB is WotC trying to avoid paying artists and writers to make new worlds. MtG hasn’t always had the best writing or storytelling, but it’s always been a labor of love creating different settings. With UB now coming to Standard, they don’t have to do any of that. The artwork for Marvel/Assassin’s Creed/etc. is already done. They can use leftover storyboards and concept art from films, video games, and TV shows. They don’t have to do any writing.

WotC will eventually use AI images when they think they can get away with it. Combined with UB, they will completely gut their creative department.

  • Been playing more of the 9 Kings demo. Still unsure if I want to buy it when it comes out because it’s horrifically imbalanced and it’s already been solved. The choices you have to make are obvious.

Basically, there are units, structures, and bonuses that scale and then everything else that doesn’t. You never take anything that doesn’t scale while trying to get two blacksmiths, at least one library, and the Steel Coat enchantment. This will allow a unit to have 500+ damage against enemies with only 30 HP. Steel Coat is completely broken because it negates an attack entirely for each stack. That means it outscales HP.

If you don’t get Steel Coat, a library, and blacksmiths, you can’t win. It’s just a matter of how quickly you can get those all stacked on one unit, then 2 more with similar setups. And because of Steel Coat, all your units have to be ranged or have high movement speed. Otherwise, you lose all your stacks of Steel Coat while enemies have theirs untouched.

The devs are aware of all this, but launch is about a week away. I’m not sure if they’ll balance things by then. I hope they do because there’s a solid game underneath all this.
