  • This is a little bit douchey with the wording but not entirely incorrect. Nintendo fans play Nintendo games, and that’s usually it. As much as they’ve gotten better at third party support, it’s cheaper to just buy a separate console or PC, which has games go on sale and have it run better. Rather than buying Witcher 3 running sub 30 FPS at full price years after release because Nintendo tax. But if you do that you’re not a “Nintendo guy”. You’re just really onto video games, so BoTW won’t surprise you.

Similar to how Apple repackages features. If you use Apple products you’re usually either a tech guy or an Apple guy. The tech guys have a healthy respect for Apple but don’t appreciate the repackaging and business practices. The Apple guys are impressed, because Apple facilitates being locked into their ecosystem.

  • I’m going to go against the grain slightly and say that it’s not as bad as you might think. Schools and businesses have deals with Google when they pay for the software. Google is not allowed to scan everything to train Gemini the same way that they do for a personal free Google account.

That being said, it’s always best practices to disconnect work/school and personal activities, for a wide variety of reasons. The more present threat is the work/school being able to see everything you do on the device. Like, EVERYTHING, sometimes even keystrokes. Furthermore, using your personal third party accounts will increase the attack surface by Google and your school/employer being able to associate the service and/or account with you. So at the end of the day, don’t do anything personal on school/work devices, and you can’t get burned by either party.

  • Jump button for comments that jumps instantly (like Red Reader)

Ability to turn NSFW masking off for feed, or at least not make it two taps to open the full image AND demask it.

    Redgifs internal feed integration

Have recent subs be account-specific instead of shared. i don’t want to see a NSFW sub on my main.

Cross posting + cross post comment combination.

Maybe some more themes and customization like ability to create custom sub combos from the app (or whatever it’s called on the fediverse, on reddit it is a multireddit)

Please and thank you. A+ app name BTW. Love that it is on F-Droid.

  • I don’t think “the left” needs to abandon religion. I have the left in quotes because most of the time we’re actually talking about progressives. And you can’t be progressive while dictating the beliefs of others. Leftism, however, benefits greatly from being united in belief. Unity is what it’s all about. But they don’t, because leftists are usually more progressives than anything else. Even when it happens, the hive mind mentality is what makes extreme leftism easy to fall apart and easy to slip into dictatorships at high population levels. And yet, we are approaching a post scarcity, post career having society, which demands socialism to some extent. But with a reliance on globalism. And bad foreign policy in place.

I don’t have an ultimate point in this I guess. I don’t know the solution, but it’s not stamping out religion and it’s not the reactionary fascism that America is a part of now.

  • Offline mode is available for free on the mobile app, but not desktop. Doesn’t work offline for browser extension at all, which is how auto fill works on desktop, which is much more useful. And offline mode for Proton  just means you can view the passwords you already created, not create more.

There are true offline local password managers but as long as the cloud sync is encrypted, I see no reason to avoid using it and miss out on half the functionality. Auth is more debatable but I’ve found uses for cloud hosted Auth too.

  • No, Play Store does not require Play Services integration, nor does it mandate any trackers.

In practice though, most use Play Services for lush notifications, and there are a LOT of apps with at least Google Crashlytics, Google Firebase Analytics, and Google Admob trackers. Check out Exodus for tracker reports. Or use the Tracker Controller app. Just note that some trackers are pretty benign, or even a security feature, like Sentry.

  • It’s not a terrible deal. The main thing I’d consider is what parts you already have and if they are available to be used moving forward. 1070 is old-ish but you might have had 16 GB RAM back then, and if so stick with it. You’re not likely to need DDR5 as a necessity, I’d worry about capacity more. It sucks because usually it’s cheap enough to be a non-factor.

PSU is a little low for a newer GPU but that’s not terribly expensive. You may even have a better one if you built your own last time. Motherboard similarly isn’t too pricy of you want to stick with DDR4.

I feel like you could do better than a 4060. I have a 3060 TI and that’s good enough for now to get me through the drought I think, though I did consider upgrading. But I would consider 4060 (even 5060) a lateral move at best for my 3060 TI. a downgrade in some ways. It’s an upgrade to a 1070 for sure but maybe not as much as you’d think for $800.

I am going AMD when I eventually upgrade, because they are a better value and are far better on Linux which I have most migrated to (I dual boot). Definitely consider AMD.

Lastly if you’re on Windows, consider keeping the 1070 as a second GPU and using Lossless Scaling. This can be set up to run on a specific GPU so you can get more mileage with universal frame gen.

If I were to buy now, I’d scavenge RAM from a workstation or something, maybe through an auction. 32 GB if I could get it. Could even find a decent CPU that way, some workstations have an i5. Then I’d buy the best AMD GPU in my price range after meeting compatibility requirements like wattage, motherboard that works with my RAM, CPU, and GPU. . But that would depend wholly on what deal you can find on RAM. You’re not gonna find a deal through normal means ATM.
