  • Yeah, I’ve been following it’s enshittification for some time, but idk, this AI stuff really struck a nerve with me. With ads, I can somewhat understand that they want to make their business more sustainable, which sucks for the end user, but at least it provides a way for Firefox not to die and we could leave the work to its numerous forks to not be shit. But the AI stuff is really nonsense, not useful at all, just a way for the company to follow the hype of the AI bubble, instead of making itself sustainable.

I can only hope that turning off the AI stuff at a code level is something sustainable and easy. I’ve used Librewolf for some time now and it sucks knowing that this will only add work for the project to remove Mozilla’s new shiny toy from the code.

Edit: maybe I’m just coping is all lol

  • So this is how I find out. This sucks balls.

Usually, I pride myself in having nuanced opinions. When generative AI was gaining ground and hype, and receiving pushback mainly from artists, I was sceptical, but optimistic. “Maybe this technology can be useful”, I thought, not eager to discard a tool only because people could use it badly.

Now, I can say that I hate what “AI” has become and that I hope that this bubble bursts before it can grow any larger. Not only it’s yet another huge useless drain for energy and water, but it’s actively fucking up yet another project that I care about. I get that Firefox wants to stay competitive, but it’s the worst watching it divert its limited resources towards useless AI and not to other much more needed areas.

  • Hmm sorry, I reread the first version and I can definitely see that I was just off of work and had my language wired to formal. This is better.

Though I’m tempted to argue that some changes look somewhat superficial and due to some regionalisms. For instance, I phrased the second question as: “Por que você escolheu este nome de usuário?”, while you omitted the pronoun “você”. Where I’m from, specifically, it’s very common to make the subject explicit, instead of in ellipsis.

I say this because, from my point of view, your version sounds a bit, uh, alien. I say this not as criticism, but to state that your comment brought to my attention that: 1- I speak very formally sometimes lol; 2- Portuguese, as many languages, has a lot of regional variation to how it is written and spoken. This means that you probably speak and write a different regional version of Portuguese compared to mine. For instance, some other speaker might entirely omit the “você” and speak with “tu” (“Como tu descobristes Hexbear, e por que queres fazer parte da comunidade?”). Which means I don’t know which variation of the language to use and could use an opinion :) (not implying that this is my decision to make, just that I want an opinion of a fellow lusófon@)

  • Hey, I speak Simplified English lol, Portuguese, a bit of Spanish and can somewhat read Latin (I know).

My unreviewed translation (feel free to, other Portuguese speakers) to the application form is the following:

"Como você ouviu falar de Hexbear, e por que você quer fazer parte da comunidade?

Por que você escolheu seu nome de usuário?

Qual é sua visão a respeito de minorias sexuais e de gênero / direitos LGBTQ, justiça racial, liberação de animais e movimentos similares?"

Some terms are somewhat hard to translate, so I’d thank suggestions and corrections.
