As a child I was labeled a bad writer because my writing was so sloppy it made a doctor’s prescription look like typed text. I’d always choose a pencil over a pen. Then in college a friend let me use their nice pen and I could write so much better. Turns out I was just always using the cheapest pens possible, and that sometimes quality does come at a cost worth paying.

  • Oh I totally agree, I probably could have made my comment less argumentative. It’s not truly revolutionary until someone can produce an AI training method that doesn’t consume the energy of a small nation to get results in a reasonable amount of time. Which isn’t even mentioning the fact that these large data sets already include everything and that’s not enough. I’m glad that there’s a competitive project even if I’m going to wait a while and let smarter people than me sus it out.

The message that OpenAI, Nvidia, and others which bet big on AI delivered was that no one else could run AI because only they had the resources to do that. They claimed to have a physical monopoly, and no one else would be able to compete. Enter Deepseek doing exactly what OpenAI and Nvidia said was impossible. Suddenly there is competition and that scared investors because their investments into AI are not guaranteed wins anymore. It doesn’t matter that it’s derivative, it’s competition.

  • To Quote Mr. Rogers:

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.

  • I think you might have misunderstood the lesson that we’re taught about the Holocaust. It wasn’t important who Nazi Germany gurt, it’s what the Nazi’s did. Regardless of who they did it to. The Nazis threw away their own humanity to achieve their goals, that is always wrong. Everything else after that is just details. That’s what people are afraid of with Trump’s deportation mandate, that to actually achieve it migrants will need to be treated subhuman. To deport them as quickly as Trump wants America and American’s will have to throw away some more of their humanity. It’s not the same as Nazi Germany in that there aren’t death camps, but Trump and his allies want America to walk down that path a bit. It’s wrong.

Not most people. Most people would do nothing, preferring to not get involved. I think most people know why it’s a bad idea to turn in people in their community like that, but it doesn’t take most people to cause an atrocity. It takes a very few doing very bad things with no resistance. It takes most people to provide that resistance and stop atrocities. I have no idea how much resistance most people will provide today but these are uncertain times.

  • Yeah, it’s kind of lost all meaning. I’ve seen Marxists call Liberals tankies, and I’ve seen Liberals calls Marxists tankies. I’ve seen right wingers call Leftists tankies, and I’ve seen Leftists call Centerists tankies. I know where the word came from, and who the first tankies were but I rarely know what a person’s intent is with that word anymore. Maybe it’s just young people slang now and I’m just too old to get it.

Because I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it anymore and what’s it seems weird and scary. And it’ll happen to you!

  • Depends on the size. A 65 year old who’s been working hard their whole life might get a small golden parachute and those ones are less unethical. CEOs and world leaders get the enormous golden chutes and there is no way to make one of those without child labour, slave labour, and other forms of exploitation.
