Sorry to burst your bubble but DC’s aren’t going anywhere. Even if we are in a position to make quantum computers commercially available in the next 10 years they’ll still need to be housed somewhere, powered, cooled and connected.

Besides, quantum computers are great at complex calculations and simulations but you wouldn’t use them to host a website or a VPS. They’ll be hideously expensive so will only be used for the specific workloads that they excel at and everything else will done with the same servers we have now.

I’ve never seen a data centre with a chimney stack. This must be an American thing.

It doesn’t. The process we have now kicked off is not going to change to any great degree whether we continue to build or stop building data centres.

Even if we immediately stopped all pollution and went back to a pre-industrial way of life, the damage is done, the ice caps will continue to melt and we will still have to deal with the consequences of our actions.

I’m not saying we should continue to abuse the environment, but AI wasn’t the catalyst for climate change and it isn’t the worst thing we are doing.

Blame the motor vehicle, logging, industrial farming, factories…

Imagine being in the tech industry and going to work for Yahoo, it would be like working in a palliative care unit at a hospital.

Flexibility. If everything was a thick, rigid bone we would be far less agile.

Energy. I imagine maintaining bone density for thicker bones would require more food to be consumed.

Medical. Breaking bigger bones would be more traumatic and debilitating than breaking smaller bones.

Just because you and your friends don’t use it, doesn’t mean it isn’t being used. If 95% of AI is useless then why are hardware prices so high? The demand must’ve dropped off by now if all the hardware they bought to date is going unused, because why would they be buying more?

Companies are definitely using AI, and not just as chatbots. I use it everyday as a search tool, to manipulate data and perform other tasks which saves me time because I no longer have to do it manually.

Most mid-large sized companies have terabytes or even petabytes of data that their AI tools are reasoning over, which requires more than the processing power of your small local model running on a Mac Mini.

I don’t disagree with you that it is impacting other industries and consumers, but as long as customers have a use for it and are willing to pay, the AI industry will continue.

Many companies operate without making a profit, sometimes it’s because they aren’t making enough money and sometimes they invest it back into the business.

Regardless, SpaceX is about to go public with a valuation of $1.8 trillion, and they arent profitable.
